2026 Trump $1 Coin Honors America’s 250th Anniversary

U.S. Mint Officially Releases Special $1 Coin Featuring President Donald Trump for America’s 250th Anniversary

The United States Mint has officially released a special 2026 $1 coin featuring President Donald J. Trump, marking one of the most distinctive pieces of American coinage produced for the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The new dollar coin is part of the United States Semiquincentennial celebration, commemorating 250 years since the founding of the United States in 1776. The coins entered circulation on September 2, 2026, while collector rolls and bags also became available through the U.S. Mint.

The release represents a significant moment in modern American numismatic history, combining a presidential portrait with imagery specifically created to recognize the country’s historic 250-year milestone.

Trump’s Portrait Appears on the Front of the $1 Coin

The obverse, or heads side, of the coin features a portrait of President Donald J. Trump.

Surrounding the portrait are three prominent inscriptions: “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776 ~ 2026.”

The portrait was designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joseph Menna and was inspired by an official White House photograph taken by Daniel Torok.

The dual dates immediately distinguish the coin from ordinary U.S. dollar coins. Rather than simply identifying the year of production, “1776 ~ 2026” connects the coin directly to the 250th anniversary of American independence.

Presidential Seal Featured on the Reverse

The reverse, or tails side, presents another powerful American symbol: the Presidential Seal.

At the center is an eagle carrying an olive branch and a bundle of arrows, representing the traditional themes of peace and national defense.

A banner held by the eagle reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” while the shield includes the number “250” in recognition of America’s Semiquincentennial.

The reverse also carries the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

Together, the two sides connect the sitting president with symbols of the presidency, the nation’s founding and the 250th anniversary celebration.

Special July 4th Coins Hidden Inside Rolls and Bags

One of the most unusual elements of the release involves a limited group of coins produced on Independence Day.

The U.S. Mint struck 250,000 Trump $1 coins on July 4, 2026, at the Philadelphia Mint. These coins carry a special “July 4th” privy mark.

Rather than selling all of these specially marked coins separately, the Mint randomly placed them among eligible rolls and bags.

That means collectors purchasing the standard products could discover one of the limited July 4th versions inside.

The combination of a limited quantity, an Independence Day production date and a special identifying mark could make these coins particularly interesting to collectors seeking distinctive variations of the anniversary issue.

How Much Do the Trump $1 Coins Cost?

Although each coin has a legal face value of $1, the U.S. Mint is selling collector quantities above face value to cover production, packaging and distribution costs.

A 25-coin roll costs $61, while a 100-coin bag costs $154.50.

The coins are produced at the Philadelphia Mint with a circulating finish. They contain primarily copper, along with zinc, manganese and nickel, giving them the familiar golden appearance associated with modern U.S. dollar coins.

Despite their gold-like color, the coins are not made of gold.

Each coin weighs approximately 8.1 grams and measures 26.49 millimeters in diameter.

A One-Year Anniversary Coin Program

The Trump dollar is part of a broader transformation of U.S. coinage for 2026.

Congress authorized special coin designs for the nation’s Semiquincentennial under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020.

For the anniversary year, the U.S. Mint has introduced temporary changes across several familiar American coins and collectible products.

The Trump $1 coin is specifically tied to the 2026 anniversary year, making the design different from an ordinary permanent redesign of American currency.

The United States has also historically followed a strong tradition of generally honoring deceased presidents on presidential coinage, making the appearance of a sitting president on a U.S. coin particularly notable.

The release has therefore attracted attention extending beyond traditional coin-collecting circles.

More Than Just a $1 Coin

For collectors, the importance of the new dollar may ultimately depend on more than its face value.

Its connection to America’s 250th anniversary, the portrait of a sitting president, the one-year commemorative program and the limited July 4th privy-mark variation give the issue several characteristics that distinguish it from everyday circulating coins.

However, collectible value is determined by market demand, condition, scarcity and other factors. A $1 coin should not automatically be assumed to become significantly more valuable simply because it is commemorative.

What is certain is that the 2026 President Donald J. Trump $1 coin represents an unusual intersection of American history, presidential imagery and the nation’s Semiquincentennial celebration.

As the United States marks 250 years since 1776, the coin provides a tangible record of the anniversary—one designed not only to circulate as money but also to preserve a snapshot of a historic year in American coinage.
