The U.S. government launched a sweeping interagency enforcement effort on August 31, 2026, targeting fraud, illegal practices and safety violations across the commercial trucking industry. The initiative brings together the Department of Transportation, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and multiple federal law-enforcement agencies.
At the center of the campaign is the newly formed Joint Task Force Crossroads of America, a multi-state partnership designed to investigate fraudulent commercial driver’s licenses, unsafe training programs, identity fraud and criminal activity connected to trucking operations.
Federal officials announced the emergency removal of more than 110 commercial driver training providers from the FMCSA Training Provider Registry. The schools were associated with more than 5,000 drivers who later failed federal English-language proficiency requirements. Investigators also identified more than 160 additional training providers for proposed removal following nearly 400 investigations across 40 states.
Federal authorities are also expanding scrutiny beyond individual drivers to driving schools, third-party CDL testers, trucking companies and employers.
Homeland Security Investigations is conducting enforcement activity involving more than 200 driving schools across 23 states. Investigations include allegations involving fraudulent CDL issuance, unauthorized employment, identity-document fraud, financial crimes, labor exploitation and possible connections to smuggling or drug trafficking.
The federal government is also beginning a nationwide audit of third-party CDL skills testers and state oversight programs. States that fail to comply with federal CDL requirements could face corrective actions and potential reductions in federal highway funding.
The crackdown represents a significant expansion of federal trucking enforcement and could bring tighter compliance requirements across the U.S. commercial transportation industry. For legitimate carriers, drivers and training providers, the initiative signals that CDL compliance, driver qualifications and highway safety will face significantly greater federal scrutiny.
